Module 7 Psych Soc Strategy - Cognition

  • Consciousness and cognition

Consciousness and cognition comprises a set of wide-ranging subjects: language, problem solving, theories of intelligence, consciousness, and the study of sleep.

The primary subjects for study within the domain of language are the properties of language, the relationship between language and thought, and language acquisition. There is a significant conceptual vocabulary within this domain, and with regard to the relationship between language and thought, some subtle ideas, such as the difference between linguistic relativism and linguistic determinism.

Although there is some important vocabulary within the subjects of problem solving and theories of intelligence, aside from language, the other major subject here is sleep. Brain waves, phases of sleep, sleep disorders. Sleep is a subject with a significant amount of closely related terms with subtle distinctions between the terms. In The Tempest, Prospero says "We are such stuff / As dreams are made on, and our little life / Is rounded with a sleep". When it comes to the MCAT, sleep is the stuff that multiple choice questions are made of.
